Cathedral sweeps Lake Central 3-0 in the first Semi State Semifinal

In Saturday's first Semi-State semifinal match, the Cathedral Irish (30-5) boys volleyball team knocked off Lake Central (29-6) 3 sets to none. ​The Irish will now prepare for their State Championship match against the winner of the second semifinal (Fishers vs Roncalli). They went 2-1 against Fishers during the regular season and only met Roncalli once resulting in a loss 3-0.

Cathedral came out "firing on all cylinders". In the end they hit on 92% of their serves, no dig and serve errors and had 40 kills (13.3 per set) which is above their average of 12.1 per set.

SET ONE

Cathedrals Jaden Greenwell ('25) started the match off with a nice smash. Nick Whitley's serve was on as he picked up two points on aces and put the Irish up 8-2. He ended up with four aces for the match. Lake Centrals Christian Czamik ('26) finally strikes with a kill to stop the momentum. Cathedral went on a 3-1 run when #8 Mark Ugo ('25) recorded a kill (11-4 Cathedral). The Irish continued to push the Indians as they went on a 9-4 run forcing a timeout (18-8 Cathedral). The Indians only scored one more point during a 5-1 Irish run when Owen Peterson ('27) put down a nice RIP (23-9 Cathedral). The first set ended on a Ryan Peterson ('25) kill giving the Irish a 25-11 win.

SET TWO

The second started just like the end of the previous set. The Indians Teodor Olmstead ('26) finally stopped the momentum with a nice line RIP.

Another 4-0 run by the Irish forcing a Lake Central timeout (10-2 Cathedral). We saw both teams with a few unforced errors until Ryan Peterson ('25) and Mark Ugo ('25) come up with a huge block (16-4 Cathedral). Lake Centrals Dannis Smith ('26) responds with a nice kill (18-6 Cathedral). The Irish finish on a 7-4 run to win the second set (25-10 Cathedral).

SET THREE

Lake Centrals Braedon Cook ('27) started the set off by catching the Irish off guard with a quick kill. It was back and forth over the next few points as the Indians continued to push Cathedral. We have a timeout on the floor (13-7 Cathedral). Lake Centrals Dannis Smith ('26) with a nice block (13-8 Cathedral). With a beautiful set by Nick Whitley ('25) to Ryan Peterson ('25) backcourt smash, the Irish go on a 4-1 run (17-9 Cathedral) and start to pull away. After a 5-2 run by the Irish, the Indians make a last push, but it was not enough as the set ends on a Jaden Greenwell ('25) kill off a set from Kellen O'Brien ('26).

The Irish will play the winner of the second semifinal match Fishers vs Roncalli
