In Saturday's Sectional 13 Championship match, the Roncalli Royals (26-3) boys volleyball team knocked off Perry Meridian (22-6) 3 sets to none. The Royals will now prepare for their Regional Semifinal match against Franklin Community (23-12). These two teams met on April 19th for a regular season match and Roncalli came out victorious 2-0.
After a slow start for Roncalli against Franklin Central, they came ready to battle in the Championship. In the end the big hitters for Roncalli (Elijah Berger, Xavier Lawrie and AJ Morris) were too much for Perry Meridian.
Sectional Semifinal Matches
Sectional Saturday started off with Franklin Central/Roncalli match. These two teams met twice during the regular season (4/16 and 4/26) in which the Royals came away with sweeps. This match was a bit different through the first two sets which left with a tie (25-23 [R] and 26-24 [PM] ). The Flashes came out very aggressive and this caused problems for Roncalli. They were able to control a high percentage of the attempted kills by Roncalli with limited errors.
Set three and four, Roncalli was able to gain control and get back to playing their game. They won both those sets 25-20 and 25-19. After a bit of a struggle for #15 Elijah Berger (OH '25) he found his stride and was able to sneak in several kills past the defense of Franklin Central.
The second Sectional semifinal had Perry Meridian and Southport. We were looking forward to this match as they both play similar styles and are rivals. They met once earlier in the season (4/4) in which the Falcons came away with a five-set win 3-2.
The first two sets were a battle with each team taking a set. Perry Meridian in set one 25-20 and Southport in set two 25-22. In the third set two of PMs OH, #7 Dawt Cungnung ('27) and #10 Za Lian ('26) stepped up their games with some great RIPs down the line and cross court. Too much power from the outside for Southport as PM took the set 25-17.
In the final set the Cardinals #21 Landon Johnson (MB '25) and #13 Simeon Thang (OH '28) stepped up their game and were able to get several kills by PMs great defense. In the end it was too little as PM took the last set 25-19.
