Barr‑Reeve Claims 1A State Championship Behind Boyd’s Late Heroics

INDIANAPOLIS — In a game defined by defensive grit, momentum swings, and one unforgettable fourth‑quarter surge, the Barr‑Reeve Vikings defeated the Triton Trojans 50–37 to capture the 2026 Indiana Class 1A State Championship at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The victory marks Barr‑Reeve’s third state title in program history, joining championships from 2015 and 2021.

To get to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Barr-Reeve defeated Liberty Christian 39-37 and Hauser 52-47 at the Washington Semi-State. Triton beat Tri-County 78-46 and North Vermillion 51-45 in the Lafayette Jefferson Semi-State.

1st Quarter Breakdown - Bulletin‑Board Start: Triton Delivers Early Punch

Both teams opened in zone defenses, forcing contested shots and slowing the early pace. Triton struck first, jumping out to a 6–0 run with layups from Landon Patrick, Jayden Overmyer, and Julian Swanson (see video below).

Barr‑Reeve didn’t get on the board until the 4:40 mark, when Carson Yoder finally broke through with a layup. The Vikings struggled to generate clean looks throughout the quarter, finishing with just 6 points on 3-of-7 shooting.

Triton, meanwhile, executed its pregame plan. As Brady Wood later put it: “Get to a fast start was written on the bulletin board during pregame. We got that start, but then we played to not lose.”

Their largest lead came at 9–2, sparked by a Julian Swanson corner three. Triton controlled the tempo, defended with discipline, and carried a five‑point advantage into the second quarter.

2nd Quarter Breakdown-Barr‑Reeve Awakens Before Halftime

Barr‑Reeve answered Triton’s early momentum with a strong second‑quarter surge. Josh Miller opened the frame with a driving layup, and at the 5:45 mark, Jaylon Graber buried a three‑pointer to trim Triton’s lead to 13–11.

Just before the media timeout at 3:54, Miller struck again, pulling the Vikings within 15–13. Moments later, Barr‑Reeve grabbed its first lead of the game when Braxton Neidigh scored off a sharp assist from Graber at the 2:57 mark, making it 16–15 (see video below).

The final minute delivered a flurry of back‑and‑forth punches. With 42 seconds left, Graber attacked the lane and finished to put Barr‑Reeve ahead 20–18. Triton responded quickly—Jayden Overmyer powered in a layup with 22 seconds remaining to knot the game at 20–20 heading into halftime.

Barr‑Reeve controlled the quarter, outscoring Triton 14–9 and dominating the paint with 10 points on 60% shooting (6‑for‑10). Their improved spacing and interior touches shifted the momentum squarely in their favor.

3rd Quarter - Korben Boyd Lights the Fuse in the Third

Both teams opened the second half battling to seize control. At the 5:23 mark, Triton’s Jayden Overmyer knocked down a jumper to pull the Trojans within one, and moments later he tied the game at 30–30 with a strong layup. That would be Triton’s final field goal of the quarter. The Trojans wouldn’t score again until 3:57 left in the fourth, when senior guard Julian Swanson finally ended the drought with a mid‑range jumper.

Barr‑Reeve capitalized immediately. The Vikings closed the quarter on a 5–0 run, taking full command of the momentum. The defining moment came when Korben Boyd splashed a left‑wing three‑pointer, igniting the Barr‑Reeve crowd and giving the Vikings a jolt of energy (see video below). They carried that surge into the fourth with a 35–30 lead.

Barr‑Reeve was the aggressor throughout the period, attacking the paint and earning trips to the free‑throw line, going 4‑for‑5, while Triton failed to reach the stripe.

4th Quarter Breakdown-Fourth‑Quarter Execution Seals It for the Vikings

Korben Boyd opened the final quarter exactly the way he ended the third—in complete command. He scored Barr‑Reeve’s first five points, starting with a smooth turnaround jumper and then drilling a three‑pointer that pushed the Vikings’ lead to double digits. Triton coach Jason Groves immediately called timeout with 5:32 remaining, but the Trojans couldn’t slow the surge.

Triton continued to battle, but the momentum had fully shifted. The Trojans managed only 7 points in the quarter, shooting 3‑for‑12 from the field and 0‑for‑4 from beyond the arc. Barr‑Reeve’s defense smothered their actions, and Triton never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

From there, the Vikings controlled the pace, the glass, and the scoreboard. When the final horn sounded, Barr‑Reeve defeated Triton 50–37, securing the Class 1A State Championship—the program’s third title, joining their 2015 and 2021 banners.

After the game, we asked Kierson Lengacher and Korben Boyd about the adjustments that fueled their second‑half dominance. Boyd emphasized the defensive mindset that sparked their run:

“I think our defense is what really got us going… we evaluate our defense in the first half and that allows us to see the game as a whole.”

Barr-Reeve (28-1) made 18 of 31 field goal attempts (.581) compared to the Trojans’ 16 of 39 (.410), and outrebounded Triton, 23-16, with Miller collecting a game-high nine boards. The Trojans made only two of their 15 3-point tries. shot 2/15 from the arc in the game and only got to the free throw line 6 times. This was one of many reasons why Triton couldn’t capture the Class 1A championship. It was a fitting summary of a championship performance built on toughness, poise, and one unforgettable fourth‑quarter takeover.
