INDIANAPOLIS — For a moment, Mt. Vernon’s season hung in the balance.
With 4:08 left in the third quarter of the 4A South Semi‑State, star guard Luke Ertel picked up his fourth foul and headed to the bench. The Marauders led 51–40, but the energy inside the gym shifted instantly. New Albany smelled opportunity — and they attacked.
The Bulldogs unleashed relentless full‑court pressure, forcing turnover after turnover as Noah Washington and Karson Stoudemire fueled a furious 12–0 run. Mt. Vernon burned two timeouts trying to stop the bleeding, but New Albany surged ahead 52–51 with 1:39 left in the quarter.
Then came the turning point.
A New Albany technical foul halted the momentum, and Owen Daugherty calmly sank both free throws to restore the lead. Coach Joe Bradburn immediately turned back to Ertel, and Mt. Vernon closed the quarter on a crucial 5–0 burst from junior Max Vise, reclaiming control and entering the fourth up 58–52.
Somehow, the Marauders had weathered the storm without their floor general.
Fourth‑Quarter Composure Seals It
Mt. Vernon opened the final period with back‑to‑back threes, stretching the lead to 64–54. Washington answered with consecutive wing triples to trim the margin to four, but every New Albany push was met with a Marauder response. With Ertel back on the floor, Mt. Vernon’s offense regained its rhythm and poise.
Ertel flirted with a triple‑double, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists, while Vise matched him with 22 points and 11 boards of his own. Their production was matched by timely contributions from the supporting cast.
Role Players Rise in the Spotlight
Senior Jamaree Collins delivered a massive early spark, scoring 14 points — including two and‑1 layups in the first quarter that helped Mt. Vernon build a 19–7 lead. He added threes in both the second and third quarters to keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length. When asked about Luke getting in foul trouble, the coaches message to the team was: "Be calm. We need to get to our spots because they were trapping a lot."
Daugherty’s eight points were equally vital, highlighted by a pair of first‑half threes and the momentum‑shifting technical free throws late in the third. Owen mentioned in our interview, the key to victory: "They love to be in transition, so we just have to take away their strengths."
New Albany’s Effort Falls Just Short
The Bulldogs forced 14 Mt. Vernon turnovers, capitalizing on the Marauders’ brief stretch of chaos. Washington led New Albany with 22 points, while Reese McKee added 14 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Stoudemire posted a double‑double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
But New Albany’s 6‑for‑21 (29%) shooting from deep ultimately kept them from completing the comeback.
A Championship Rematch Awaits
Mt. Vernon’s 77–69 victory sends the Marauders to the 4A State Championship, where they’ll face Crown Point, a dominant 66–40 winner over Northridge in the North Semi‑State.
The two teams met earlier this season, with Crown Point edging Mt. Vernon 60–56. Now, with a state title on the line, the rematch promises to be one of the most compelling showdowns of the year.
Will Crown Point repeat the result, or will Mt. Vernon seize its shot at revenge?Either way, the 4A championship stage is set for a thriller.
