🔥 ERUPTION IN INDY: Ertel Leads Mt. Vernon to First‑Ever State Crown in Thrilling 52–50 Finish

Indianapolis — In a 4A State Championship loaded with storylines, momentum swings, and star power, the Mt. Vernon Marauders delivered a historic performance Saturday night, rallying from a double‑digit deficit to defeat Crown Point 52–50 and secure the program’s first boys basketball state title. The matchup featured two of Indiana’s best: Crown Point entered at 25–1, finally breaking through the North Semi‑State after two straight years of heartbreak, while Mt. Vernon arrived at 27–3, driven by the brilliance of Mr. Basketball frontrunner Luke Ertel and the sting of last year’s semifinal loss. What unfolded was a heavyweight fight worthy of the stage.

Crown Point Controls Early Behind Defensive Masterclass

Crown Point opened the night with a clear plan make Ertel uncomfortable. Senior guard Bryce Peters shadowed him relentlessly, forcing the star into a 1-for-6 first quarter. Offensively, the Bulldogs spread the scoring around, with Dikembe Shaw, Mason Darrell, and Peters each contributing early buckets. Mt. Vernon struggled to find rhythm, shooting just 3-for-13, and trailed 15-10 after one.

Second Quarter: Trading Punches in a Game of Runs

The second quarter showcased both teams’ ability to seize momentum. Crown Point struck first, opening with a 6–0 run fueled by senior forward Dikembe Shaw, who knocked down a jumper and added a free throw as the Bulldogs stretched the lead to double digits.

But Mt. Vernon refused to fold. After a timeout at the 5:11 mark, the Marauders answered with an 8–2 surge, sparked by Ertel’s steady free‑throw shooting and a strong finish from Max Vise. With under a minute remaining, Mt. Vernon had trimmed the deficit to five.

Just as the Marauders threatened to flip the game, Crown Point delivered a late counterpunch. Jack Lux scored on a cut to the rim, and Mason Darrell drilled a deep NBA‑range three at the buzzer, restoring a 30–20 Bulldogs lead at halftime.

Through two quarters, Crown Point looked every bit the state’s top team, holding Ertel and Vise to a combined 18 points on 5-for-18 shooting.

Mt. Vernon Flips the Script in the Third

The Marauders emerged from the locker room with renewed energy. Ertel’s and‑1 floater sparked an 8–0 run, slicing the deficit to two and forcing a Crown Point timeout.

Then came the turning point. Twice in the quarter, Crown Point held the ball for more than 90 seconds, slowing the game to a crawl and disrupting their own offensive rhythm. The Bulldogs scored just five points in the period, allowing Mt. Vernon to claw back within 35–32 entering the fourth.

A Fourth‑Quarter Duel for the Ages

The final eight minutes became a showcase of two stars refusing to let their season end.

Shaw opened the quarter with a three, but Ertel answered with a floater, a deep three, and a perfect assist to Max Vise for Mt. Vernon’s first lead of the night at 40–38. Ertel then scored five straight to push the advantage to 45–40 with under a minute left.

Shaw, who finished with 24 points and 9 rebounds, willed Crown Point back within two, but Mt. Vernon’s supporting cast delivered in the clutch. Brady Webber calmly sank three free throws in the final 11 seconds, and Jamaree Collins added two more during the late surge. Shaw buried a three at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough. The horn sounded, and Mt. Vernon stormed the floor as state champions for the first time.

A Championship Defined by Poise

Crown Point’s second‑half stall, combined with Mt. Vernon’s relentless push, proved decisive. The Bulldogs were outscored 32–20 after halftime and failed to attempt a single free throw in the final two quarters.

Mt. Vernon, meanwhile, got contributions from five different players in the second half, none bigger than Ertel’s takeover and Webber’s late free throws.

On a night filled with pressure, history, and two elite teams chasing their first title, the Marauders made the final and loudest statement.
